We Care

Environmental Sustainability

Find out more

As a global transport, logistics and technical service provider for hyper-scaler data centre operators, our ambition extends beyond the transportation of goods from A to B. Our commitment to sustainability drives our efforts to maintain efficient global supply chains while championing decarbonisation across our value chain and the transport and logistics sector.

As part of our environmental responsibility, we are already implementing environmental sustainability initiatives that cover all aspects of our company activities.  From reducing greenhouse gas emissions and using energy-efficient technologies to switching to more environmentally friendly alternatives and avoiding waste, we consider our environmental impact in the supply chain. By using the latest innovations, we work together with our clients to create sustainable solutions that balance efficient processes with environmental protection.

Our Environmental Sustainability Goals
Achieving our Net-Zero 2030 Goal

We have aligned our sustainability goals with our key-customers! We are committed to reducing our company greenhouse gas emissions to achieve our very ambitious net-zero 2030 target and therefore developed our Green Logistics Strategy!

Our Environmental Sustainability Goals
Purchase of 100% Green Electricity Worldwide since January 2024

For our offices, warehouses and depot charging infrastructure, we have been purchasing 100% green electricity since the beginning of 2024 wherever we do not produce electricity for our own use with the help of photovoltaic systems.

Our Environmental Sustainability Goals
Offsetting of Unavoidable Greenhouse Gas Emissions from 2030

From 2030 onwards, unavoidable emissions will be offset from a portfolio of voluntary climate protection projects that bind CO2 emissions from the atmosphere in the long term and thus effectively neutralise the emissions caused by us.

Our Activities

We use our own solar energy at many sites, procure 100% green electricity worldwide, and continuously develop the energy efficiency of our sites. Our buildings meet high standards and are certified. We also attach great importance to transparent reporting on environmental impacts.

Renewable Energies Expand

We already achieved one of our most important goals: Since the beginning of 2024, we have only purchased electricity from renewable sources for our sites worldwide. We only consider electricity generated from solar, wind or hydro sources to be renewable. We take a local market approach to procurement, preferring direct contracts to the purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). We also already produce our own solar power at various locations around the world.

In the U.S, we have joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Green Power Partnership programme. The Green Power Partnership is a voluntary programme that helps increase the use of green power among U.S. organisations to promote the U.S. market for green power and the development of these sources to reduce air pollution and other environmental impacts associated with electricity use.

Own Solar Energy Expand

Our warehouses offer great potential for generating our own solar energy. Currently, over 19 photovoltaic systems are already in operation at Arvato x ATC sites worldwide. In addition, further projects are at various stages of the planning phase.

Energy Efficiency Measures Expand

The demand for energy (electricity and heating energy) in warehouses is rising, especially with increasing automation. Energy-efficient action therefore means acting in a way that conserves resources. We reduce our consumption by installing LED lighting as standard or using motion detectors in our offices and warehouses. Other ways to reduce energy consumption include better insulation of the premises and intelligent control of heating energy in the most heavily used areas of the warehouse. Using waste heat from our automation solutions for heating is also an important topic we are currently looking at.

Building Standards and Certifications Expand

The decision to construct a new building is accompanied by various challenges in terms of sustainability. For this reason, we have defined in an internal Arvato "Sustainable Building Policy" which building standards we are committed to in order to be able to achieve the climate-neutral operation of a distribution centre. Internationally recognised certifications such as LEED, DGNB or BREEAM underscore this approach. Sites already certified or in the certification process are now located in Austria, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, Türkiye, the United Kingdom and the USA.

To continuously make logistics site operations more environmentally friendly, some of our distribution centres have already implemented ISO 14001 (environmental management). At ATC we are in the implementation stage for both ISO 14001 and 50001.

Environmental Reporting Expand

The basis for effective climate protection is transparency regarding all relevant direct and indirect emission sources as well as sound analysis and reporting. Within Arvato since fiscal 2017, data collection and climate accounting has been carried out across all sites with the help of our 'green.screen' energy and environmental platform. It is also the backbone of our annual environmental data analysis, in which more than 100 employees worldwide participate. As we include more and more detailed data points in our analyses, we are continuously developing emissions transparency and accounting options within the platform. ATC is currently on-boarding to the group reporting platform Green.Screen and will be included in the corporate ESG & CSRD reporting for 2025.

Green Logistics by ATC

We have developed our Green Logistics Strategy with the focus on fully understanding our global data centre client’s needs to deliver decarbonisation of their supply chains.

This not only refers to trialling and implementing low to zero-tailpipe-emission innovative alternative fuel technologies but also includes adopting environmentally friendly strategies for our entire logistics and service operations, warehousing and supply chain management.

Since 2022 we are using hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO100) as a drop-in replacement for fossil diesel fuel reducing on-road emissions by up to 94% and have implemented the first depot charging infrastructures at our facilities and battery electric heavy good vehicles (BE-HDV) for final mile transportation.

In the meantime, we have transitioned ~30% of our fleet to so called Zero-Tailpipe-Emission (ZEV) vehicles and are on target to increase the HVO100 usage to 80+% for 2025.

Meaningful change demands proactive action. We embrace innovation and stay open to new ways of working to drive sustainability. By continuously investing in and developing cutting-edge solutions, we make a positive impact on our industry and the world around us. Our commitment to innovation and sustainability guides us in leaving a lasting, transformative mark.
